Carcasona (Carcassonne en francés, Carcassona en occitano) es la
capital del departamento de Aude, en la región Languedoc-Rosellón
(Francia). Su ciudad amurallada fue declarada en 1997 Patrimonio de la
Humanidad por la Unesco.
Es una ciudad medieval restaurada en el siglo XIX. La cite está
habitada por poco más de 100 personas, aunque en sus afueras viven más
de 40.000. La ciudadela es realmente bonita y conserva su doble
muralla.
Está situada a medio camino entre Perpiñán y Toulouse, al sur de
Francia.
Hacia el año 800 a. C., la ciudad, situada en una colina, se convirtió
en un importante centro de intercambio comercial.
Carcasona empezó a ser estratégicamente importante a partir del
momento en el que los romanos fortificaron la cima de la colina,
alrededor del año 100 a. C. y lo convirtieron en el centro
administrativo de la colonia de Iulia Carcaso, denominada más adelante
como Carcasum y Carcasso. La mayor parte de las murallas
septentrionales son de esa época.
La fortificación consiste en un anillo doble de murallas y 53 torres.
