Đặc điểm hình thái:
Thân, Tán, Lá: Cây nhỏ, thân bụi cao 0,3-1m. Gốc phình rộng thành
củ, xù xì, mập, gần hình trụ, trên cong queo, phân cành nhánh ít. Lá
hình khiên rộng, có 3-5 thùy cuống lá đính vào 1/3 gần gốc, màu xanh
bóng, nhẵn đẹp.
Hoa, Quả, Hạt: Cụm hoa trên cuống chung dài, mập, thẳng, màu xanh
xám. Cụm đế hoa màu đỏ. Hoa có 5 cánh màu đỏ tươi. Bầu trái xoan,
nhẵn, màu xanh bóng. Quả nang độc.

Jatropha podagrica is a species of plant known by several English
common names, including Buddha belly plant, gout plant, purging-nut,
Guatemalan rhubarb, and goutystalk nettlespurge. It is native to the
tropical Americas but it is propagated as an ornamental plant in many
parts of the world.
The stem is swollen into vasculum at the base and filled with thin
sap. The plant bears bright red coral-like flowers throughout the
year. The plant contains the toxic curcin, making it poisonous.
Jatropha podagrica is also known for its incredible ability to attract
a variety of butterflies wherever it is grown.

Erect shrubs to 2 m tall, with woody stem swollen at base or lower
part; branches stout and short, fleshy, sparsely lenticellate.
Stipules spiniform, persistent leaf scar large and prominent; petiole
8-10 cm, glabrous; leaf blade peltate, rotund to elliptic, 8-18(-25) ×
6-16 cm, nitid green adaxially, gray-green abaxially, glabrous on both
surfaces, base truncate or obtuse, margin entire or shallowly
2-6-lobed, apex obtuse; palmate veins 6-8. Inflorescences terminal,
long pedunculate, branching short, red; calyx ca. 2 mm; sepals rotund,
ca. 1 mm; petals obovate-oblong, ca. 6 mm, red; stamens 6-8, connate
at base; anthers nearly as long as filaments; ovary glabrous; styles
3, connate at base, bifid at apex. Capsules ellipsoidal, 1.3-1.8 × ca.
1.5 cm, with 3 longitudinal grooves. Seeds ca. 1.1 cm, smooth. Fl. and
fr. almost throughout year.
All parts are used as medicine for reduction of swelling, for pain
relief, and to detoxify snakebites.

Jatropha (Gout plant) is an attention grabber and a must in every
tropical garden. It has a large bottle-like caudex and huge leaves up
to 10-12 inches in diameter. The more shade, the bigger the leaves.
Great natural bonsai. Makes a good potted plant but can also be used
as a conversation piece specimen in a small garden. This showy plant
grows about 2-3 ft high, with a knobby, swollen stem and red flowers
in large terminal clusters. Partial sun and a well-drained soil are
preferred. Propagation is by seeds, which are produced freely and
germinate easily. When the seeds ripen, they burst open, so watch them
to turn brown before you miss them jumping away! Seed pods will
explode, launching the seeds several feet away.

Abstract
Japodagrin (1) and japodagrone (2), two macrocylic diterpenoids
possessing lathyrane and jatrophane skeletons, respectively, have been
isolated from the root of Jatropha podagrica Hook. Four other
diterpenoids (3-6) were also isolated from this plant. The structures
of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of NMR and HRMS
analysis, and by spectral comparisons. The compounds displayed
antibacterial activity against some gram-positive bacteria.

Beautiful. This plant is a botanical relative of poinsettias, which are originally from Mexico.
