Slippery When Wet

Slippery When Wet by Photophool.
A nerve-wracking drive on the Silverton-to-Ouray road (US 550). And yes, it IS a long way down. If you want to experience this like sitting in the motorhome's passenger seat, view it LARGE.

Through the P-Tiger's windshield.
Colorado, USA

Goodness, no safety barriers in place! (too costly I suppose)

That IS quite a drive, so high up and SOooo far down. My girls still talk about that "scenic" drive we took them on when they were young. Not for the faint of heart, there's no room to put guard rails.

Interesting that it is filled with mine tailings from gold rush days.

A very Merry Christmas to you ... and a fabulous unfolding of 2006.

No thanks, I'll pass because I am afraid of heights. Even so, this photograph is a fave. I keep coming back to it, because it is so wonderful. Cannot find the right words to say why, so I will just say......wow!

There are no gaurd rails because you can't push the snow off in the winter. That is one of my favorite areas in every season but especially the fall.

Yeah. and this road is even more fun when you go with people who drive through it everyday and don't slow down where a normal person would.

Love this pic. It was wet the day we drove through it too so it captures it almost exactly as I remember it.

Got any from the right-hand lane coming the other way? ;)

@ Parrotheader: We don't have any of that yet. This was a one-way trip northward head for Colorado Springs via the scenic route. I expect my designated driver might make me take over on 550 South. :-)))

Great shot for drive-by. It was about this time last year (Dec. 31 to be exact) we moved up to Portland OR from Scottsdale AZ. We drove all the way up through California and the Oregon coast. Very wet and very windy on roads not very unlike in this pic. It was a thrilling sublime ride.

If your ever back in that area and have the time take the Durango-Silverton Railroad trip. Bring an extra pair of undies. It's worse then this road is. Nice capture......
