Crystal Clear

For some reason I’m very fond of central compositions. I know lots of people don’t like this (because they occasionally tell me), but for me the rules are only valid if you want to follow them. Anyway, this image was made at midday, using my 8 stop neutral density filter. I wanted to smooth out the water to really simplify the composition. If I’m honest, I wish I could have gone for a swim here, it was midsummer and lovely and warm. The water was about 3 meters deep and it was crystal clear! Oh how I love St Ives! Out of interest, just after making this image I headed back to the little beach just behind me and I found a spider crab. The tide was as low as I had ever seen it here and I picked it up to show the kids... my son found it fascinating, but my daughter nearly shattered every glass on the beachfront cafe! Oh what a fun birthday it was!

I'm quite fond of central comps too...

I agree with you regarding central compositions. When you face a dominating subject it's often very aesthetic to put your finger into this fact and emphasis its dominating role on you composition. I also like to do this more often than it's "the rule". This photo here is a perfect example for this case.

Sadly, or not, I have the same fetish about centre-weighted composition. Similarly, I have been criticised for not putting enough thought into my compositions. Phooey! Great shot, Jason!

many thanks guys... yep, I’m glad others like the central comps (o: I like your thinking here, the dominating role in the comp is something that I haven’t thought about before, cheers I wasn’t aware it was a fetish... maybe you should get some help with that one (o:

Weird effect, when I first saw it I thought it was a twilight shot with the rock picked out by torch light. Works though, even for an old luddite like me.

Like the depth you have got in the water and the rock has such detail. Great exposure for mid-day. Great work.

Once you know the rules, you can break them ;)
The rule of the thirds is a guideline. Like a friend says, if you want to break the rules, shatter themt. This comp works well. More so perhaps because the crop is almost a square.

I'n my opinion, the rule of thirds works well to produce a balanced composition, but when you deliberately looks for ways to break them, (as opposed to carelessness) the shot looks so much more interesting, nicely done
