I’ve photographed this tree many times. It’s very much tucked away off the beaten track and if you didn’t take a particular footpath then you’d miss it. I found it a few years ago, as it’s just around the corner from this extraordinary cafe in a little hamlet called Storiths, near Bolton Abbey. The cafe is fantastic if you have small kids, as there is a very large and considering the deep dust, very old train set that covers the top floor of the old barn which the cafe is in. Now I’m not really a train set fan, I was a scalectrix boy myself, but my kids love it. I like the place because of its character. There is this very quirky farming couple that run it, and it’s obviously his ‘toy’ that he tolerates customers viewing it as and attraction.
Anyway getting back to the photograph, what I love about this location is a combination of the tree but more importantly the little hill it resides on. The hill and tree, create a dominant graphical feature the I feel has lots of photographic potential; (well there is a stone wall that you can see leading up to it, but I much prefer the tree).
As I said, I’ve been here many times before in the attempt to get something I’m happy with and unfortunately not ever been quite satisfied. I’m not sure if it’s because I feel the location has the potential for a killer shot, (which has eluded me so far), maybe I just need to keep trying and one day the perfect ingredients will be there. Or there isn’t something missing in me that I’m not even aware of yet. Maybe I need to see this place from a different mental perspective in order to gain new incite and put the three-D jigsaw together. Funny if I were talking to myself in the future, what would I say? It would be much more convenient if I were able to talk to myself from the future, but I’d probably freak myself out. Anyway I’m sure I will develop photographically (man I hope so) and will hopefully crack this nut of a puzzle eventually, if I persist that is. So when I do I can at least look back at this text and see that I was asking myself for time travelling inspiration. Anyway until somebody invents time travel, I will have to put my frustration on one side till I manage to find that spark, as I’m sure this will not be the last time I try with this location.
