Notes: Contains photographic reproductions of engravings by Marc Antoine Raimondi. This is considered to be the first publication of photographs of works of art in France. Benjamin Delessert was a member of an influential French family of bankers, politicians, civil servants and philanthropists. He studied photography with Gustave Le Gray, exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1855 and was a founding member of the Societe Francaise de Photographie. He selected the best Raimondi prints he could find in public and private collections, photographed them and contributed an essay. His scientific ambitions manifested itself in the size of the photographs, which replicated the size of the originals. The work appears to have been published serially. The first volume and livraisons 2 and 5 carry the publication date of 1853; livraison 6 that of 1854; livraison 7 that of 1855. The title printed on Livraisons 2, 5-7 is, Marc Antoine Raimondi Par M. Benjamin Delessert ... Livraison .... Each plate is pasted onto a sheet carrying a brief printed caption and a numeric reference to Bartsch.
