Hayling Huts

Hayling Huts by PhotoGraham.
A luminous low level cloud floats above beach huts on Hayling Island, illuminated by the lights of the funfair. The huts are lit by tungsten exterior lights on adjacent buildings and sodium street lamps to reveal a colourful night world.

That's wonderful !! I love beach huts and all kinds of huts in the UK !!
and at night they look gorgeous ! (did you photoshop the sky , the grass, the road) ? it's eerie, the kind of picture I used to dream of when I came back from England.

This is pretty much straight from the camera. It was captured in RAW format so I slightly adjusted the exposure and colour balance after shooting, but that was it. No fancy PhotoShop magic.

What does RAW mean ? surely an acronym, but which one ? (please not another riddle again)
Well it's beautiful. I suppose the eeriness comes from the great contrast between the mouvement of the sky and the perfect stillness of those quiet thoughtful huts.

RAW means uncompressed, instead of JPG. The image is saved exactly as it is on the sensor in the camera rather than being converted and compressed in the camera. It allows you to make adjustments after shooting that don't work as well with jpg images.

Is RAW the same as "high definition" ? I mean, if I set my camera to take pictures with 6 million pixels is that pretty RAW ?

Alice, when a normal (compact) camera takes a photo the CCD captures a bunch of values, but we never see these values. The camera performs realtime (i.e. near instantaneous) calculations based on perceived white balance measures, etc, etc. This is done in Canon cameras by the DIGIC II chip. This processed image is then compressed and written as a JPG. RAW is no acronym, is raw, as in uncooked. untouched, unprocessed. It's those actual values captured by the CCD. The processing that is normally done in realtime can be done on your PC to allow you to tweak those parameters which affect the image. Also to perform in realtime the camera has to take short cuts. After all you camera isn't as powerful as your PC. By doing this processing on your PC you'll get a better pic even if you don't tweak the parameters. Nearly all DSLRs allow RAW to be captured, and some, but very few, super zoom compacts allow RAW. Hope this helps.

Oh and nice photo Graham.

I'm taking rule 2 seriously!

"2. Can be water in any of its forms gas, liquid or solid. Pure, poluted or enhanced but not with hops or we'll never get out of the pub!"
Water vapour suspended in the sky! It's my best Hayling photo by miles so I had to give it a shot. Also, it appeals to me to take a photo of water on the beach and NOT include the sea. I'm strange like that.

Ok, you have a point. Water should be the main element of the shot. Here it is the second main element, clearly less dominant than the huts. I'll take this out of the competition pool.

Ease up tiger - you don't know me and when you do you'll know I'm just winding you up. Follow your heart and let the others decide whether it's a winner using the voting system. It is a good worthy shot and captures the essence of Hayling.

Well you might say the essence of Hayling is water (you probably wouldn't, but you might) so I'll put this back in then, water vapour and all.

Thanks. Actually the light was quite ordinary. Just some exterior lights on a building to the right and streetlamps on the road beyond. The long exposure reveals a scene that is invisible to the eye.

Ok, now you have me curious. I don't know if the rebel 350 has built in noise correction as an option.... did you reduce all of the color noise and luminance noise in post processing? For a 30 second exposure at ISO 1600, you have done an incredible job eliminating the noise! That is, reducing noise and preserving detail.

PhotoGraham  Pro User  says:

The 350D does have in-camera noise reduction and I use it. This had minimal post processing as mentioned above. No noise reduction on the PC.

I thought I recognised the subject from the thumbnail - heh - I was down at Hayling only a couple of weeks back shooting the huts :o)

I love that sky. It's like molten chocolate (mmmm chocolate). The vanishing point is good, especially with the funpark at the focus, though I agree with that suggested crop - the green hut sneaking out the back door doesn't help and the fact that the purple one is perfectly end-on and has been lit from something out of shot on the right makes it look a bit like it's been rubber-stamped on.

But nice shot, I'll have to go down there at night sometime :o)

Awesome photo, I don't think it needs a crop, the colors are great and composition is cool, only thing I can think of that would enhance this would be a small crop at the bottom. Awesome photo

Alice M  Pro User  says:

I just pop in to say that I completely disagree with all the cropping suggestions : the extra space, road and grass in the foreground are precisely some of the elements that give mystery and originality to the picture, enhancing the perspective with a unique point of view !

... I second that! Especially since the leftmost wooden post nicely finishes off the wooden-post-diagonal running through the picture!
