Butterfly Flight Montage

Butterfly Flight Montage by photofarmer.
I tried to get some photos of butterflies in flight. It's fairly hard to do, since the butterflies move so fast. I can't follow them in the viewfinder, so I have to focus on one on a flower, then anticipate where it will go when it flies off. 95% of the pictures were out of focus (as are a lot of these) and most were blurred by motion, although the shutter speed was 1/500 or faster.

Wow !!!! What a wonderful collage/moasic of all these butterfly pics. So very colorful and neat design. There's no way I could ever get butterflies in focus if they're flying around. I have a hard enough time when they're sitting still. This is really cool !!!

This is wonderful!!
I was just trying to catch one in flight the same way yesterday. I held that button down half-way for the longest times, waiting for him to flutter up a little. Only got one shot, but it was fun trying. Hehe

You don't need any help from me. These are excellent. You will have to burn about 90% of all you take. But the ones that work are worth the effort. Another thing is the subject. Big swallowtails are the best posers, especially the giants. Also you mentioned 1/500. That will give you higher quality shots than mine but you will have more movement blur. I usually am somewhere around 1/2500 with an ISO of around 1700 -2500 and sometimes even 3200. The 3200 is mostly on hummingbirds. But you are on the right track and I really like what you have done here. The one in the bottom center is spectacular. It is fun though isn't it.
