I decided to try shooting sunrise at Font's Point near Borrego Springs. The directions I found online were spotty so I decided to trust the corroborating map placements of other Flickr photos I've seen. I was able to locate the Flickr-mapped location on my car's navigation, set my coordinates and took off in the middle of the night to arrive before sunrise.
The point is supposed to be about 4 miles off the main highway up a 4x4 vehicle recommended wash. From there the road dead-ends and it's another short walk up to the point. I arrived at the wash about 30 minutes before sunrise and I found the drive to be pretty exciting in my Acura TSX. Ten minutes later I arrived at the end of the road and began my hike (in flip flops of course!). After about 90 minutes of trekking around the cactus-laden desert, I decided to head back, defeated. I couldn't find the point. Talk about frustrating!
I made it back to the main road and headed towards home. About five minutes later as I sped home listening to Neil Young and pouting, I saw a sign zip past my window. I pulled over. It read "Font's Point 4 Miles" with an arrow pointing up a sandy wash. What!? So up the wash I went trying to carry enough speed to keep me from getting stuck. By the time I reached the Font's Point it was two hours after sunrise and the color in the landscape was completely washed out. So, this is a shot from Font's Point which I decided to show in Sepia.
It is a truly remarkable place and I hope I have the opportunity to go back and shoot it the way I originally intended.
