One of my first photography trips to the Oceanside Pier was a sunrise session in December of 2007. That morning the conditions were amazing and the photos that resulted have come to be my most popular on Flickr. The swell was very large, there was a strong off shore breeze and the light was amazing. Since that morning, I’ve made repeated attempts to repeat that success. And, while I’ve enjoyed each trip to the pier over the past two years and have captured many images I’m proud of, I haven’t found similar conditions to that morning until yesterday.

The photo above was shot shortly after sunrise on Friday, December 18, 2009. The light seen above presented itself for only 3-5 minutes before fading. And, during that time, this was the only large set that rolled through. The smaller waves during this short window still look majestic, but pale in comparison to the power and beauty of this wave.
