AisleOne - no, I'm not bitter.
"Bitter" implies that I resent
other peoples' success in getting attention
for their work.
I don't make infographics, so I'm not bitter
that lots of the "infographics"
that get attention seem like poor examples of
the art, if they're examples at all. I'm
annoyed about that, as someone who likes good
infographics, but I'm not bitter.
Ha, get the idea from Stef's tweet? I
actually started doing the exact same thing
when I saw it, granted nowhere near as good
as this (I was going for extreme 3D marble
keynote effects), before realising I was
meant to be working.
Thank you. I love the idea of an infographic
but recently they've just been so damn
useless. I always appreciate it when somebody
opens their mouth about things that other
people just appear to accept.
And yes this has certainly given some
spotlight to designers.... BUT just because
you're a designer, doesn't mean you're good
information designer. Information design has
to focus on the relevance of the data not
just pretty pictures.
The key is to distinguish between Graphic
design and Information graphic design. The
former aim’s is to make something look
beautiful, the latter to convey idea’s,
information and data.
The two often get confused, especially by
designers who don’t understand the difference
between the two.
@sbyrnefraser I'd actually argue it's the
opposite, that it's a confused generation of
designers who believe that graphic design is
just the pursuit of beauty - that's the
problem. One of art's pursuits is beauty, but
design in any form should always be primarily
about solving a communication problem. If the
communication method is beautiful, then all
the better.
Designers who think all they need to do is
make something easy to look at are designers
who miss the mark in understanding that
design is about making something
understandable, and this translates to
graphic design, user interface design and
information design.
Anyone, designer or otherwise, who wades into
information design without knowing the ground
rules and when to break them is embarking on
a failed expedition, to mix my metaphors a
bit.
Graphic design has never been, and never will
be about "making things beautiful."
If you believe that, then you have much to
learn. The person who made the iPad graphic
suffered from a misguided mindset that they
can copy the look of something, and recreate
its impact.
The popularity of so many useless
infographics - the ones lampooned in this
Flickr post - is indicative of just how many
people feel design is simply the art of
making something beautiful.
Amen - @alternatekev Reading the comments above about graphic
design vs. info design I was about to write
the same thing you did. You just beat me to
it, and did a much better job. Anyone
involved in visual design is supposed to be
helping to convey a certain message, not just
take a message and make it pretty.
exactly, @alternatekev. Design should
continue to be a guiding set of logical
principles that help you solve problems, as
it has been since the dawn of time. Graphic
design merely took those logical principles
and applied them towards the organization of
the printed page, but I'd say that those
principles (like balance and form) preexisted
their naming, just like every other
scientific discovery.
Really the only true beauty in 'design' is
the that which is derived from the
organization of chaos...all the other
aesthetic trappings are just that.
@alternatekev is right. Design is for
purpose, Art is for beauty.... but it doesn't
matter if it's a website design or an
infographic, it should be both aesthetically
pleasing and serve it's purpose well. Many
infographics forget the purpose part, and
simply want to make the data "look
nice".
G-R-E-A-T in these times of long gif images
that are nothing but a bunch of useless
information illustrated by useless stuff. I'm
printing this and putting in our wall now (I
work doing infographics and
"infographics" in a newspaper).

I’m with ya. I’m pretty sure the price pie chart on the iPad one was just wrong, too.

good point. this style is closer to "nicely presented numbers" than "visualizations". but it can be informative nonetheless.

Just because it's an infographic it doesn't mean the information has to be good or useful, just graphical. :D
Stefan Berndt (38 months ago)
Instead of wasting time for your »infographic« it would be more helpful to give help and hints on – in your opinion – useless infographics.

Very good and true. Perhaps we should require a license or some sort of training before we set people free with graphing software.

Quit your whining bitching you're just jealous a medium in which designers are flourishing in.
So you didn't hop on it. Good for you.
