Haïti 13/52: Rooftop Stories

Haïti 13/52: Rooftop Stories

People live their live out in the streets so much more than where I come from - or even on the rooftops. The reinforcing steel on top is a common sign indicating the house could always be expanded - when times get better.

Haïti 12/52: No Privacy

Haïti 12/52: No Privacy

When you live in an IDP camp (internally displaced persons), don't expect to much privacy.

The presidential palace in the center of Port-au-Prince still lies broken, almost untouched since the earthquake two years ago. It seems fitting not to touch it as long as half a million people still live in camps. When I came to see the palace for the first time, this is what I saw when turned around and looked just across the street.

The park Champ de Mars contains one of the bigger camps that was improvised after the earthquake 12th of January 2010. It will be hard to secure the population untill these camps are gone. The recovery is critisized for being to slow - but it is easy to forget there were three times as many living like this after the disaster.

Haïti 11/52: Road Block (Explore)

Haïti 11/52: Road Block (Explore)

This picture was taken in Cite Soleil that for some years was more or less occupied by criminal gangs. But for the last few years several police stations has been built after joint efforts by UN and the Haitian National Police. Last year Cite Soleil was the part of the city that was worst off during the earthquake. It will still take years before the area can live up to it’s sunny name for all it’s inhabitants.

The scene is far less dramatic than it’s first impression though: Army engineers have arrived in Cite Soleil to do much needed road works. Note the backdrop is not the sky but the mighty hills south of the city.

Today I return to Port-au-Prince after relaxing days at home with my family. The 12 day vacation also enabled me to catch up with the 52-week project regarding my “Haiti-set” on Flickr. I have really appreciated the reception of these images – the previous upload even had a few hours on Front Page.

This should inspire me to keep a once pr week schedule in 2012, we’ll see when the heat and humidity catches up with me again.

My photography has taken a more journalistic turn, often “shooting on the run” from a car window or when being surrounded by the general chaos of this city. Shooting from 20-150 pictures daily - processing with help from presets I’ve made in Lightroom... 2012 will be another exciting year for photography!

Finally I should say a big thank you to steady contacts who have been encouraging me through 2011. Also a big sorry to a lot of people who has added me as a contact for the last few months, I have not been able to keep up with this at all. In my book you should at least have the time to look at someones stream once when you add a contact.

Haïti 10/52: Kontan Nouvèl Ane (Explore #36)

Happy New Year to everyone, in Haitian Creole this time... The future is in our children, and my young friend Patrice is so full of energy I think he is the one who should bring forward the wishes of good times ahead.

Haïti 9/52: Motorcycle Diaries (Explore #54)

Haïti 9/52: Motorcycle Diaries (Explore #54)

This one makes me think of "Motorcycle Diaries", the story of a two wheel roadtrip in Latin America by the young Che Guevara. As he watched poverty and injustice along the way, the trip changed his life forever.

The story takes place in 1952. Driving across the mountain on this newly built road - meeting only pedestrians, donkeys and motorcycles - gave a timeless feel that could be 1952 just as well as 2012.
