Aseroe rubra II

Aseroe rubra II by petrichor.
Taken today in the garden. These are fruiting bodies of a fungus growing in my front garden. The species is a saprotroph and is common in mulched garden beds of southeastern Australia.

This photo was Botany Photo of the Day on November 30, 2007.

Very cool. I've only seen them when they're dried up, never in their prime.

Great picture! And you were lucky to catch them in such perfect condition. I only ever seem to find bedraggled specimens that have lost some of their colour.

We have them in New Zealand too.
www.flickr.com/photos/kiwizone/2110660692/
I suspect they may have originally been Australian but floated across the Tasman Ocean on a log of wood, following the prevailing weather systems which seem to reach NZ after visiting Australia. I am not aware they are in South Africa or Chile, so they may not be Gondwanaland natives? According to www.mushroomexpert.com/aseroe_rubra.html
they are found on Pacific Islands, including Hawaii and even locally in USA, where they are supposed to be accidental imports.
