Southend : Pier Scene 1

Stretching 2158 metres into the Thames Estuary, this beautiful construction holds the title of the longest pleasure pier in the world.

The original "Wooden Pier" was opened in 1830, to be later replaced by the "Iron Pier" in 1889.

During World War II, the Royal Navy took over the running of the pier and it was renamed HMS Leigh.

Horse trams were the original "alternative" mode of transport to take you its length, however, the above tram is one of the two now fulfilling this duty.

I apologise in advance if there is any errors with the above facts....it's not intentional :-)

Southend, Essex, England.
