New Toys!

New Toys! by Pete Ashton.
I didn't quite appreciate how much time I'd been spending on eBay until all three of these babies turned up at once.

Total cost before postage: £17.05

Fun times ahead!

As Gareth says, it's a Photo Magic. I have no idea what film it takes but I reckon it can be bodged to take 35mm along these lines, hopefully producing shots like this.

It'll take 127, I think. You can bodge just about anything to take 35mm though, bits of washing up sponge and a few elastic bands. I have a few rolls of 127 b&w film at the mo, buzz me if you want one.

The Zenit's a camera I love, I have 3 of them, a Zenit 11 was my first ever SLR. There are two Zenit groups on Flickr for tips etc, and an amazing yahoogroup too, links are in the opening thread here. Fwiw, I don't know any new Zenit user who hasn't had a wind-on accident resulting in nothing on the film because it hasn't been passing the shutter. Best way to avoid this is to make absolutely sure it's connected to the take-up spool properly. I've been known the stick the end down with sellotape. :)

There's a secret little catch in a ring around the shutter button which is the rewind release, and if you don't find and engage that, the film will tear when you're rewinding. Might be a good time to grab a dark bag on ebay, too. :)

Great bokeh with that Helios 44. The Russians reckon 44m is the most approximate to true human vision, whereas the Japanese use 50mm as the standard. Just that wee bit wider is quite good, I think. A superb workhourse of a camera. Notorious for working after being dropped out of aeroplanes, allegedly. Oh, I have a flash unit for it too, if you want to give that a try.

I've got a couple of lenses that should fit the Zenit if you ever want to borrow them. I dunno how much use they'll be: I haven't had anything developed I shot with 'em. They're zooms, so perhaps they aren't the best...
