NASA Boeing 747-123(SCA) (N905NA) & Space Shuttle Atlantis Orbiter (OV-104)

NASA Boeing 747-123(SCA) (N905NA) & Space Shuttle Atlantis Orbiter (OV-104) by Michael Davis - AirTeamImages.
Taxing to their position for "NASA 905 Heavy" at Fort Campbell Army Airfield. This is just a slightly different angle than a couple others in the photostream.

what a waste of money.
we can't even take care of our own people here on Earth and we will never find life in space!!

Riiiiiiiight. And that's the only reason we have the space shuttle program is to find life on other planets. I should've figured that out sooner in my life. You'd be surprised at what research in space has done for humanity here on mother Earth.

One of my dreams is to see a Space Shuttle. Will make it over to the States one of these days coinciding with a launch hopefully. Superb shot (again) Michael !

Excellent shot ! You don't realise how big the shuttles are, until you see one plonked on a Jumbo !

This is most likely a dumb question, but I haven't researched it yet. How do they get the shuttle on top of the 737? I assume with a crane or something?

They have a gantry type of system that lifts the shuttle above the 747. Then they pull the 747 under the suspended shuttle and lower down the orbiter.

Thanks! That is interesting. I just tried to google it and I wasn't coming up with much info, maybe I was looking in the wrong places.

Not a problem!! Try searching the NASA website for it. I remember seeing some pictures on there with it. Also, try Airliners.net!

Simply out of this world photograph of the orbiter "piggy-backing" its 747 transport, Michael. I know Fort Campbell, Kentucky is home to the 101st Airborne along with the largest squadron of Apache helicopters on the eastern seaboard, but I had no idea it can handle something this massive. Back when I lived in New Jersey I toured Lakehurst Air Naval Station with JROTC and the tour guide had said that they were equipped with the package to host a shuttle landing, still this is really impressive considering the weight the 747 must support during take-off and landings.
