Endangered Sea Otter Hauls Out For A Nap (Enhydra lutris)

Endangered Sea Otter Hauls Out For A Nap (Enhydra lutris) by perlgurl.org.
It's a rare treat to catch a sea otter comfortable enough to hauling out on land. Most won't venture anywhere near human areas. There are only a few thousand Southern Sea Otters left off the coast of California. They are listed as Endangered on the (IUCN 2.3) Red list.

You can find out more about Southern Sea Otters on my wildlife and nature conservation blog, Naturally Speaking

He (she?) is SOO cute!! Really, how often do you see sea otters on land? And long enough to dry out?

Lovely shot! We are sure you took this with a telephoto lens and made sure to be a respectful distance away!

Of course I did, as well as dissuading some rather obnoxious kids who were trying to feet the poor otter by hand. I know the rules :)

I wrote all about the day this happened at Moss Landing beach here: www.perlgurl.org/archives/2007/04/california_ sea_otters_h...

Great blog! Thanks for sharing those amazing photos, and for letting people know the rules. Being able to haul out on land and get out of that cold water seems to be increasingly important to California sea otters, with a declining food base and an unhealthy population. Thanks for letting every know about these amazing animals!
