Yes, they belong to my parents.

It would be cool to have them as pets if CA allowed... I didn't even realize before my parents got them that you could have them as pets!

No, they're actually quite touchable. The reason they curl up into balls is to actually bend the quills up to make them stick straight out and stiffen up. If you pick them up before they curl up, they don't poke you. Plus, they're really soft wherever there are no quills.
