A Path Amongst the Heavens

The planet Venus
The planet Saturn
The star Regulus in the constellation of Leo
The trail of the ISS and Shuttle pass under the moon right here.
A Path Amongst the Heavens by Jason (Audrey's Dad).
You'll probably need to view this large or original size to see it well, but this was a capture of the International Space Station and Space Shuttle Atlantis on June 19, 2007. The trail passes just beneath the moon and extends across almost the entire frame. Both space vehicles traveled from right to left (West to South-East). This was taken facing almost due-west.

This was taken a few hours after Atlantis un-docked from the ISS, and actually was visible following the station about half the visual distance Saturn is from Venus (see notes). The trails from both mostly overlapped in this exposure, but in the original size image you can see sections where the line appears thicker or thinner, indicating that the shuttle was slightly parallel to the station and may have been manuevering.

very cool! I was meaning to check this out too but totally forgot about it, not that it would've mattered since i recently sold my camera in anticipation for the new Canon DSLR body coming out later this summer.

Great catch of the ISS. The time exposure make the moon look full, but I think it was in the first quarter this date. (Picky Picky Me)

RC- It was better in person actually, the lights of both were quite bright, they look dimmer than the stars here only because of thier speed. On this pass they went right over SF, so the view from LA would have been pretty good.

Born- Yes, first quarter, it is the long exposure flaring it to look almost round, you can see the thickness of Venus' trail as a flare too, otherwise it would look like a disc to the naked eye!

There is another similar pass tonight, I might try again with some better ISO and f/ settings and see if I can get a better result.
