Jersey City

Jersey City

About:
Jersey City as seen from Manhattan about 30 minutes after sunset., nothing more to add actually.

Location:
New York, USA
This image is also geotagged

Technical stuff:
Exposure: 8,0 sec at f/13 at 2 EV
Taken with: Nikon D300S and 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 at 36mm

Manual blend of 2 shots. The main shot was the 2EV shot of bracketing, used another 0EV shot from another bracketing set to get some detail in the two piers and took a 3EV shot from the same bracketing set to remove two disturbing light trails from boats.
High-pass sharpening on skyscrapers, Lightroom adjustments on the 2EV shot to get the overal balance right.

Jersey City skyline

Jersey City skyline

About:
Jersey City skyline at sunset seen from Manhattan. Yes I know another panorama, Flickr is not really suited for this, that's why I added a link to gigapan at the bottom.

Location:
Manhattan, NYC, USA
This image is also geotagged

Technical stuff:
112 shots, 2 rows of 16 unique shots each consisting of 7 bracketed shots. Most work was done by the computer during the merge, it is really a test of my system, during the merge I couldn't use my computer and without an SSD it was too slow...
Anyway I had to recreate the panorama about 5 times to get everything the way I wanted, the Hudson is a busy river, had too mask away a lots of boats, also merging water like this is not easy too, another PIA was the bottom right corner of this picture. There was an unsharp spot and I missed some data there.
Than a tonemapping was done in Oloneo
After this I had to work in PS to smooth out the other details:
- bottom right corner with the close stamp tool
- removed the branch at the right top
- tried to make smooth transitions in the water.
- Get the color balance and overall tonality balanced with several layers.

Aftermath:
Still not quite happy with the water, still has banding and strange effects on it.
Composition wise it could be better, my main subject is the skyline and it doesn't get the attention I want.
To remember for next time:
- Focus more on the subject (I should have gone to the waterfront, zoom in the skyline and take a panorama of that?
- Always check focus on the second close up foreground row of picture

Don't get me wrong I'm still happy with the result, but It's not the killer panorama I wanted

Runner vs cyclist

Runner vs cyclist

About:
For the photoclub at Fluxys the next assignment is something creative, I had some ideas: the mashup of the previous upload was one of them, another was lightpainting and a multi exposure thing. For the last one I wanted something unusual first I was thinking about ghost leaving my body, then I came up with split personality idea. First I was thinking clothed-naked, but I found this a little inappropriate, then I thought maybe clothed and swim suit, but the difference between the two is to great.
Then I came up with this idea: One side as clothed as runner and one as cyclist, looked around my small appartement and found this location something special with the picture frame above me to fill in that space.

Pre processing
Camera on tripod, with wired remote control programmed to take a picture every 10 seconds.
On the right of me was a silver screen to provide some fill-in light
Also on the right was a off camera flash to 1/40 to fill in the dark spots and give a highlight in my eyes
Camera was put on rear-curtain flash sync.
Took about 30 shots as runner and 30 as cyclist always trying to sit in the same position

Location:
At home in Boechout, Belgium

Technical stuff:
Exposure: 0,6 sec at f/8,0 at 0 EV
Taken with: Nikon D300S and 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 at 44mm

Post processing
Merged two different shots: one clothed as runner and one as cyclist.
Used the one as runner as background layer.
Pasted in a new layer with the cyclist as extra layer
Added mask to cyclist layer just around the body of the cyclist. Cleanup of the sides of the mask.
The face didn't align up perfectly but it was a close match, so I selected the runners head and used puppet warp to get it properly aligned.
Now it was time to touch up the wire from the headphone and fill in the blanks left from the puppet warp.
Next up were the removal of the electrical outlet and a speaker which was hanging on the wall.
