Is this the eye? (Bear with me, I work on extant organisms with simple ocelli) In the wider view the omatidia look so much like the little tubercles on the rest of the head.

Thanks for your comment. This is the eye alright, of this large,( six inch) Devonian trilobite. The individual eye facets can been seen here. They are composed of calcite as is the rest of the fossil. I think that they consisted of calcite or aragonite when the creature was alive as well.

Well done! Do you use a Micro-Nikkor for your bug photos? I use a 60mm with a tripod so that I can keep the ISO low and crank the f-stop to 57 for shots like this.

On this shot I was playing around with the shutter speed and f stop. After some experimentation I have gone back to setting everything on auto! I have a sigma macro lens, nothing too fancy. I set my camera up on a book to keep it steady. I use natural sunlight outdoors always.
