Three rivers

Three rivers by Payton Chung.
The confluence that made Chicago. The Sanitary & Ship Canal [originally I&M Canal] (left) created a water route enabling ships to travel between the Great Lakes (and Hudson Valley via Erie Canal) and Mississippi basins.

The South Branch of the Chicago River (to upper right) created the Lake Michigan harbor upon which Fort Dearborn was built.

Bubbly Creek (lower right) drained the stockyards.

More specifically, the idea of the canal created Chicago. The railroads took over most of the heavy lifting by the end of the first decade of wild speculation. Geographic determinism aside, it was innovations in the processing and exchange of meat, grain and other raw materials that really made the city an economic powerhouse. If all you have is a nice confluence, you end up with St. Louis.
