Hoults Yard Railhead - 128/365
Hoults Yard is barely 5 mins walk from me, but I haven't ventured onto the site for nearly 15 years. I was introduced to Charlie Hoult, great grandson of the founder of Hoults removal business earlier this week, and he kindly offered to show me round the development. The new offices are fantastic, but we've all seen offices. As a photographer I'm more interested in the fantastic spaces and buildings - and their potential for development and future use, as exhibition and conference space, for making and showing of films... the limits are only those of your imagination!
Hoults Yard was built for the renowned Tyneside pottery Malings www.maling-pottery.org.uk/ which, at its peak, employed over 1,000 staff at the site. The Hoult family acquired the business and used the space for storage and removals until 1983. Hoults Yard houltsyard.wordpress.com/ has been transformed in recent years from an industrial estate to a funky and flexible office complex with character. They have focused on revitalising the historic buildings, creating Maling Studios, The Old Forge and The Boiler House. These house clients including Mere Mortals, Alcazar, Green Media, Standing Stone, The Point Design, Fat Frog, Yipp Films, onebestway and SB Squared. It looks like a great place to work, with entrepreneurs in PR, design, digital, marketing, manufacturing, audio visual, conference production and general business. The Kiln www.thekiln.co.uk/ is the latest development, providing 6 ground floor and 16 first floor offices in high spec, open plan new space alongside a popular café in the original 1879 Clocktower.
