the beautiful & sexy model Josi de Paula.
~
a bela e sexy modelo Josi de Paula.
-
I wonder what is going on with some people in the market place here.
I've taken some beautiful photos of her, some in natural light, others in artificial light, some glam, others more natural. She has close ups of her face, clicks showing her body, some fashion ones, some romantic, some sexy ones. I learned today that this particular agency said they are not good enough for her portfolio there! She's got photos that show her beauty and versatility as a model. I wonder why they are not 'proper', maybe because she did not pay one of the "insiders"? this person said the photos should not be retouched, I went to their website, there are many photos of other models that are retouched, oh pleeaase! it's well known that retouching photos is a regular procedure, specially in adds, photos on magazines and so on.
This one was taken with artificial light.
note: some of the photos I took of Mi are in Paris, an agency called Viva. Also in São Paulo, at Mega. Antonia La porta won a competition in Rio de Janeiro with this photo, she was elected Muse of Summer 2008. The photo is in her agency as well.
~

Beautiful photograph Paula!

Regarding your question, "do you think a model should have photos of herself just in artificial light?," I think whatever light works, works. That is, use whatever light you find pleasing or available. If that is artificial, then great. If it is natural, then great. If it is a combination of both, then great.

Light must be used effectively, whether it is natural or artificial.

It must depend on the expectations of the agency, or perhaps the "agency" has an agenda other than great photos. Perhaps one based on revenue to them or the photographer of their choice.

Oi Paula.

I think that artificial verses natural lighting is irrelevant to whether a picture is acceptable or not. If the picture is good , then it's good and if it's not , then it's not. You're right about the bullshit aspect. It sounds like there's some other motives at play here.

Paula...

Linda foto! :)

Difficult subject you bring up here. I think the issue is to avoid all the agency bullshit and focus on showing the best qualities of the model in whatever way necessary. Times change and fashions and tastes do too. I would keep doing exactly what you are doing and not focus too much on commercial acceptability at this stage. Just do and they will follow. Eventually.

My personal preference is the artificial light opposed to the natural. I see more detail and I like the softness of the picture. Either one is an amazing work of art and don't let them get you down.

Paula.

Don't worry about the idiots. Perhaps viewing their stupid opinions equates to the fact that five "experts" viewing the same photo, movie, model, or other artistic may end up with five different judgments. I was struck by this when my daughter made me watch "America's Next Top Model" and the experts all had wildly differing opinions on the "look" and thereby the worth of the models under consideration. Trust us: what you're doing is outstanding.

well, as you say, that agency seems to have its head up its arse....they are in love with a "fad".....great photos and art are beyond that; and will be represented by any type of light. If you read the light with a different white balance it would change anyways....so what are they on about? clearly they did not like your "light" ie your style.
look at benetton images from teh past, or Diesel now...they were different and i'm sure unacceptable to the majority of conservative mind numbed agencies.
you should stick with your own style and ideas.......especially as they are so damn good....

Agency... BS... I would bet money you are totally right that its because you are not on "their" list, which could very well include some type of agency referral fee arrangements

Regarding light I feel ,.... any light is ok..provided we get an exact result of what our mind pre visualizes before taking a shot..Confining to certain kind of light only restricts our freedom of artistic visualization ....

Randomly taking a shot and fixing it in photoshop is a bad practice. True Artists don't do that way. .. A true Artist Plans his/her shot what to do before and after taking his/her picture... He/she has a total control of the medium...from scratch to the end.

Every portrait you have produced has been exquisite in nature, well thought out in execution and has made the model look supernaturally wonderful. i know nothing about the photo industry other than there seems to always be some kind of drama in the way of the photographer. i suppose time aka "paying your dues" is the only way to become sucsessful. i have given up thinking i can make a carer (or spelling for that matter :-)) out of photography. i enjoy it so much i have decided to just learn more and have fun with it.

in regards to this pic i think it's awesome, really! the only thing i can think is that maybe the skin treatment is a touch to much? so the photo is great, the photographer nailed this shot and still some aren't satisfied. well that's the photo biz i guess. guess i'll just keep my boring day job i have.

but paula...
stick with it. you have what it takes. you are young, creative and motivated! (and a hot model yourself!) this is a very competitive industry in all fields. be it fashion, food, sports or wedding to name just a few. i wish you the best always paula. if i lived closer to you i would beg to work with you! have you thought of working as an assistant to any top pros in your area? just an idea, just another way to pay your dues an put yourself in a position to make an even stronger presence in the photog industry. sometimes i just wish i could sit down with you and brainstorm. talk shop and talk about current and future trends.

just never forget this and i will say it again, stick with it...you have what it takes!!!
peace...

Great photo!
As for your question on lighting... Every shot is a new shot to be looked at as a new shot, natural is nice and studio lighting is good in the hands of pros like you. There will always be games played by the agencies. Stick to your game plan. I like all your work greatly!

Sunlight, candlelight, moonlight, strobe light ... infra red light if you wish.
Just pick the one that reveals the mood, qualities, visual impact you are trying to convey. If it projects what you saw in your minds eye you are successful. That is the art form, and you do it well.

In contrast, commercial work is an attempt to get into the client's or director's mind. It is often less gratifying artistically but there can still be an element of pride in being able to interpret someone else's vision
- but it is their's and not yours. Be clear on which vision you are attempting to render and your wonderful talent and artistic tastes will do the rest.

You clearly have lots of supporters Paula.
That should say a lot

To your ongoing success
Mike
