Nice capture of abandonment. It makes you ask who did the abandoning and who's been abandoned?

friends from out of town comment on the wire and homicide and ask if baltimore is really like that. shots like this prove that in places, indeed it is.

I wonder how much it would cost to buy up the whole block?

The Sun had an article about a fellow who bought a rowhouse near the old American Brewery in 1959 for $12k, and today it's worth$14k.

formstone as far as the eye can see, i'm sure wouldn't cost much to buy up the block. can we start bidding at $100?

Thanks for all the comments on this one. I've always been fascinated by this street because it is so extremely desolate and has been that way for so long. This place is close to Clifton Park though. It could be a nice place to live, but I don't think this part of Baltimore is going to be getting any major aid anytime soon unfortunately.

Spent many a day and nights on streets like these. The Wire was a very enlightening show to work on.

So desolate, it's hard to believe it's America. It looks like some post-apocalyptic scene. I knew a homeless man who lived on a street like this in Bmore and he called it his abandominium.

many places of baltimore have been abandoned for decades, when whites left only a few blacks would move into the neighborhoods because there were 2 more whites than blacks so this is what you get.

Powerful Image. Something really needs to be done about especially east (and west) Baltimore. They should pay people to live there like they do out west to get an area populated. Just hope there's never a plan to demolish them, because they have a lot of value (on many levels! just not money wise). great shot. On street view i counted exactly 10 houses not abandoned, out of about 50 homes. Very depressing

patrickjoust  Pro User  says:

@ urbanfeel - Yes, I find it very depressing. In some ways even more so now as the economy for the middle and upper class is not going well. It seems as though forgotten places like these will be even more neglected.

This article in the Sun today about the American Brewery is a glimmer of hope for this neighborhood though:
www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/baltimore_cit y/bal-md.ci....

I don't know how much this can help such a blighted region, but at least it's a step in the right direction. I agree with you... I hope there can be more focus on repairing and making whole communities like these rather than just bulldozing and hoping for the best.

Both sides of my family lived here in the 70's. My parents met there and had me. I remember my grandfather coming home from work. Walking up from North Ave. Both of my grandparents are buried in the cemetery around the corner. Its sad that this street came to this. Lots of memories here for my fam

@ black55knight - Thank you so much for sharing your story with me. That is really fascinating to know. It is a shame that the street has deteriorated so much. There are a couple of nicely kept houses at the very end of the row, but the last time I was here, this street still looked pretty much the same.

You know, i never knew this, but Perlman Place is a historic district!

www.ci.baltimore.md.us/government/historic/di strictsNEW/p...

Therefore my fears of them being torn down are meaningless because by law they can't be demolished! Im pretty sure thats how it works at least

patrickjoust  Pro User  says:

@ urbanfeel - Unfortunately Baltimore has a sad recent history of historically "protected" buildings being torn down anyway for one reason or another (the Rochambeau for instance), but I hope that these buildings here will be preserved and made livable again. The fact that they are far from any major development area both helps and hurts them in this case. At least they are not likely to be torn down in order to put up a parking garage.

urbanfeel says:

Patrickjoust, I totally forgot about the Rochambeau! That was enraging. Lets demolish history in order to reassemble it to the way it previously was? Was that really their thought process? Unfortunately you're right. i really hope this neighborhood can be saved. The potential is so evident. Its so incredibly attractive and historic, like the rest of the East and West sides

patrickjoust  Pro User  says:

@ urbanfeel - Yes, I agree with you. There are a lot of really neat neighborhoods on the East and West sides that could use some help, and by that I don't mean tearing down beautiful old buildings and chasing out the residents, but it seems as though these places might as well be on another planet... they are just totally far away from any place investors and taxpayers want to help revitalize. I hope that can change someday, but we seem pretty far away from implementing any real solutions.
