What's up?
stamped on back "Portrait by that Fellow Lewis"
Found in my great-grandmother's things. I assume he is one of the infants she helped deliver in Oxford, MS. As a frequent midwife and also as a Methodist Sunday School Teacher, she collected a large box full of local children's photos - many not identified - sent by the new mothers as thank-you's or given to her by her Sunday School students. In the box were photos of William Faulkner and his family. She didn't help deliver them, as far as I know. But she was the boys' Sunday School Teacher. I remember one photo in particular - and 8x10 of her in a big hat with her class of boys - William wasn't in this one, but his brother was. Unfortunately, most of the photos burned when my parents lost their home in 2001 to lightning. But I had a few of them in my apartment in a box. This is one of the ones that survived the fire. I pulled it aside because I like his quizzical expression and thought it novel that he's wearing a dress (although that was the style back then). Blogged at gnmparents.com (?) Commentsfun old new
