A fun retro sign and looks like there's some nice grain. But I'm not sure either what's caught your eye - I don't see any artistry or humour of any note. Of course there doesn't have to be either :)

Thanks for your time, folks. Final score 30.5/50

geodesic - trying to convey "hey, that's a funny sign"

acreepingmalaise - I see it, yes, slightly out of focus there, maybe? Must have been the network censors!

lewishamdreamer - the humor I saw is in the bear's expression when facing the prospect of eating the burger.

Of course, it's a simple snapshot in many respects so any score about 5 is very generous. I reckon any score below that as reserved for snapshots of drunken friends and photos of your aunt's cat...

Really, I'm conducting an experiment to see if comment-oriented groups can launch an average photo such as this into flickr's Interingness Explore thing. I am pimping this photo. What's your opinion?

Many thanks, avocat. I wouldn't ordinarily have thought to take the photo, but I noticed some similar pictures of nostalgic signs on flickr before the trip and when I saw this sign and a similar one across town, I was inspired - ever happen to you before? I often see photos on flickr, too, that look strikingly similar to ones I have taken.

Thanks, swardraws, you are too kind...Each time I read a sweet new comment like yours I'm left wondering when the meanie comments will begin from "How Crap is My Picture." What an epic journey this photo has begun for me...LOL

I'm realizing that the art snobs don't see anything artistic because they are ONLY looking at the photo. But they are missing the point that THEY are the art, or at least a part of it. These comments are like performance or participatory art, in a way - an art of the process. Or am I inflating this? It's good for a laugh anyway. I hope I'm exposing something about the whole process of posting comments and the purpose behind comment groups...Why do you think we need them here at flickr? Does anybody else find the "interesting" photos a little less than interesting?

This comment bears repeating because I wish somebody would either agree or disagree with it; it's a fine topic for debate: One of the "judges" said of this photo, "I don't see any artistry or humour of any note." What do you think about that?

No, not really 'cos I don't know who's MrPibb or Talor Hicks, both of'em. I was leaving my comment before reading those of the others 'cos I think it can influence your judgment. But I will now... We both anwesha and I commented at the same time when I was posting my pix before her. As an effect she hasn't left any score on mine. Mayb she will correct that. Later can you have a look after I've read all your comments (I hadn't any when I posted on Judgement d, neither looked at what anwes' was saying...), and maybe leave this kind o com with a score?!? But pls explain what it means. I don't get a word apart fr "vin rouge". BTW, I am nearly a rooster cos' I am native french but as roosters are partly related to chickens, panda are hardly to bears. Ain't they? :-) I am located in Taiwan where we don't have pandas even in zoo (otc 2 black bears in wild), but plenty of McDo's. I often go there 4 reading newspapers, thx Mr Ronald!, and a free-refill or two. THX & cheers nr 2.
So... I really enjoy being asked a sleezy pack of crappy food from a Mr Panda (alias China 4 me). The question is do I accept'em b4 knowin where they come from (made of...) and where does that leads us to.. alike Pandas being offered to Taipei's gov! But I think this might be a bit out of focus in the subject or comment (That I've tried to grasp..;-), or even linked 2 ur "social study"?
Did u get what happened with anwesha013, talkin bout humour 2 before posting her own strange pix...(whereas I posted my scaffolding b4 comment)???, hardly related to Panda's sex life too but not that far, near extinction by interbreeding and intoxication... As for the picture? I give it a 10, as that was probably how many degrees fahrenheit it was when you took it...less with wind-chill.
The soft 'Dicks' sign Acreepingmalaise mentioned had to be, either the network censors, as you said, or the icicles forming on your lens.

Well, if you look at it sort of sideways, that panda (or whatever it is) looks like it's smiling and has its tongue out the side of its mouth, ready to lick its lips. But, straight on first glance, it looks like it has indigestion just looking at the burger. Not a good layout for the sign--the artist probably wasn't thinkin' too hard about how others might see it? But the pic is cool! Yes, colors are a bit flat, but I love signs and this one rocks. Now, if you knock that 'D' out completely, you'd get---ICKS hamburgers...which might explain a few things. lol

Thanks, Mr_Nylon, for adding this one as a favorite.

Moonjuice - It's so confusing to me, like flickr actually hires a person to pick out her favorites or something. Here's another wacky example of what I'm talking about: this photo of mine that just made it into explore -

Holy Threads

julesschroom - Thanks for your comment and for adding this as a favorite - bonus points for you, too! I like an occasional honest opinion, esp. if it gives technical advice, but I find that I enjoy a different "look" than do many folks on flickr who frequent the scoring groups. I guess it's my romantic sentimental nature - or maybe (if they are right) my complete lack of artistic perspective and talent...LOL :-P

charluna - so happy to get a comment like yours - love it!

I was feeling very homesick for Spokane Dicks (oh my that didn't sound to good did it?). I was just getting up the courage to ask someone in the Spokane group to post one for me.
As for artistic merit - beauty is in the eye of the beholder - for instance this photo brings back memories of cruisin' Riverside listening to all those cool at the time - never going to mention again - 80's songs. So for me the image evokes teenage angst, humor and hormones, much like a picture of a sunset evokes romance in most people. And do we really need another sunset photo on Flickr? I for one was going to fav the photo before I read about your mission.
My funny Dicks story: freshman year college driving down to Seattle with a full car, comparing the Dicks in Seattle to the Dicks in Spokane - looked in the back mirror to realize that the guys in the back had no idea we were discussing a burger joint.

No, it never made it into Explore, even though it is listed by flickr as my "Most Interesting" photo...and has been for weeks. When you search some of the tags on this photo it shows up as the most interesting then. But I think somebody at flickr got wise to my scheme and banned it from Explore, which makes no sense, really, since the comments do make it interesting.
