• I made sure to shoot this at an angle where you could see the light striking as many pier posts as possible.
  • The clouds moved a lot in 25 seconds. It softened the sky so that the picture feels as soft as it really felt to be here on this morning.
  • I waited for a hole in the clouds to allow the sun to spotlight the top of the hill, to which the pier pointed.
  • I made sure to include the end of the land, to show that this is a bay and not just a lake.
  • The water looked rather messy in the shorter exposures I made, so I went long for a smoother and softer look.
  • Some fishermen walked through here as I made this exposure but since they did not stop walking, they can not be seen! I wanted a feeling of solitude in this picture.
  • I made sure to shoot this high enough so that the water and distant shore could be seen above the pier for some extra depth.
  • The mist added extra depth to the distant mountains.
  • Hey Patrick, nice capture, but you missed drawing a box ... HERE :)
haha, just messin with you. - Stephen Oachs (ApertureAcademy.com)
  • I kept this area free of boxes so that the loonies could have their say. So if you see any comments here, you know who and what they are...lol!!!
  • Guilty as charged! - Stephen Oachs (ApertureAcademy.com)

Light at the End of the Pier - Hanalei, Kauai

The pier pointed to the first light on a balmy morning in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii.

The Hanalei Pier points directly towards the mountains often referred to as Bali Hai. It refers to a song written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II from the musical South Pacific. This area resembles the island of Tioman, which is the original Bali Hai.

With the sun rising behind the camera, openings in the clouds allowed the light to filter into the clouds and illuminate the mountains on the opposite side of Hanalei Bay. Within 10 minutes the rain came in and this low warm light was gone for the day, replaced later by the bright light of mid-day. I used a long exposure to show the motion in the clouds. Also, the long exposure time smoothed out the water and simplified the image. That enhanced the effect of light hitting the posts of the pier.

things I love about this photo include the dof, richness using 50 iso, the long exposure, the vibrance... the mood, the way the pier and clouds lead to the point of focus... everything.

With fine work like this, it is clear that you are deliberately making it difficult for your Flickr friends to know what to comment on! Complaints aside, the first thing that grabs my attention is that strip of light on the water along the far shore, then the light in the clouds and the accompanying reflection on the water, and then the sunlight on the hill (sweet!), and then my eye comes back to the beach and takes a fast run down the pier and over onto the hill again!

This is just a fabulous example of expert work with grads and a long exposure. The subtle light on the mountain and the contrast of the color in the clouds is amazing. Love the light on pier posts, too.

    Wow...it's sensational when seen large.
