Waiting for the Perfect Sunset

Waiting for the Perfect Sunset

Hah hah… what can I say… please don’t take this too seriously… in Cape Town you’d never have to wait this long for that “perfect” sunset!

This is NOT a Vertorama. :)

EDIT: I suppose I should mention that no Pentax K1000s were hurt in the making of this photo (see my answer to Izzy's comment below).

Sprinkling of Spectacular

Sprinkling of Spectacular

Okay... here is some more wild-flower goodness from my recent trip to Canada's Banff National Park.

Although this field of flowers was not quite as attractive and colourful to me as the flowers on the other side of the road (in this photo)... that certainly didn’t stop me from shooting them too! :)

Nikon D300, Sigma 10-20mm at 19mm, aperture of f16, with a 1/30th second exposure.

Freedom Fighter

Freedom Fighter

And now for something COMPLETELY different!

This is a cropped, single-frame shot of my buddy Vaughan posing with his FakeK47... shortly after sunrise this morning.

We're lucky that we didn't get ourselves arrested... considering that we shot this at the very popular V&A Waterfront! :)

Nikon D300, Sigma 18-200mm at 52mm, aperture of f10, with a 1/1600th second exposure.

Emerald Lake Arrow

Emerald Lake Arrow

Here's a seven-image panorama of the Emerald Lake and Lodge... taken about an hour after sunrise.

I spent more time processing this pano than I spent on any of the other images from my trip to Banff... about six hours in total!!

Although I'm always very careful to expose for the brightest part of any scene that I'm photographing... the mostly overcast sky didn't really provide enough light to expose for the highlights... without completely under-exposing the mountains and trees. And while I can usually retrieve loads of details from the shadows in the RAW file converter... these shadows weren't just dark... they were black! Fortunately I'd captured this series of pano-images at several different exposures... so before I stitched the panorama... I first balanced the exposures for each pano-image... by manually blending three images together.

It took me forever to get this finished photograph looking the way that I remember seeing this at the time... I didn't get it exactly right... but this was my best effort! :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Brilliant Vermilion

Brilliant Vermilion

The two photos that make up this Vertorama were captured shortly after sunrise at the Vermilion Lakes... in Canada's Banff National Park.

If any of you are still considering joining Anne Strickland and myself on the Isle of Skye for our photographic workshop in August… you shouldn’t dilly dally too long… we still have a couple of spots available… but most of the best rooms (in the two houses where we’ll be staying) have already been taken!

Please contact us at skyephototour2012@gmail.com for all the details.
