Soon - living only in the legends.... by Pandiyan.
Nilgiri Langur
Trachypithecus johnii

Normally found in southern India. Lives in a troop of 5 to 16. Eats leaves, shoots and fruits.

In the 'Endangered' list. Threatened due to habitat loss and heavy poaching. Legend has it that its flesh and fur have aphrodiasic properties. As with the tiger, this belief is killing this beautiful animal..

Please make sure monitor adjusted properly for color and brightness. Otherwise the features of the Langur won't show.

This happens to be most interesting Flickr picture tagged Langur.

MMm. We have so many artificial things out here that have aphrodiasics properties! Take those, damn. Definitely a beautiful capture, I am learning more and more in this stream! I love its fur, and how its attention seems directed towards you :)

Pandiyan, I think this is really a self portrait of you!

Regarding the jokes, I had to take down. The people DID decide. They took me seriously and I spent an entire morning explaning that it was a bad joke and I wasn't in a coma, and they could stop praying for me!!!

Well, Joe, I am not as handsome as the chap in the photo.

Flickr crowd is very quick to pray and show solidarity for causes.Good souls. Perhaps you need to underline your jokes.

I do read a lot of humorous writers and make up many jokes on my own. Usually I forget whether something is original or plagiarised. Insane one could be Spike Milligan or me, I am not sure.

It is sad to think that we are most probably to blame when these creatures become extinct...more so when you consider how long it has taken to get to this stage of evolution....I am not to concerned about the quality or highlights in it`s fur..when behind the shot is a more pressing problem to address.

Beautiful picture nice work...I am a herbalogist by study and wish people would think about what they do...some trees are being destroyed by ringing the bark which in the end kills branches or whole trees in their search for medicine...Namaste Bert

Beautiful shot, real beautiful!! so crisp!!
I've heard stories from hunters (10 to 20 years ago) hunting the monkey for 'curing' asthmatic problems. This was near Erode district. These unsavoury characters used to go hunting along the Kerala-TN borders. The sad part was that they used to know the forest rangers and wardens (amazing the doors liquor opens) and thus would go hunting in protected parks. A uncle used to be involved long back, he stopped a decade back, good that he's stopped. He told me many stories, including how one of the asthmatic hunter would mix the blood of the monkey with brandy and drink it; not sure whether it helped, but he did this as he had severe asthma. Don't know whether they ate the meat. Yeah hunting is still going on by the poor and, i know for sure, by the rich, who grease the powers-that-be!

The reason I was told why they drank the blood was because the monkey ate leaves and plants of forest (herbals) and, thus they believed, these properties would be imparted to the consumer. Sad. Real sad.

Thanks ectomorfo and aE. The threat to a lot of animals in the east is either habitat destruction due to 'development' or organised poaching. Of course, both are fuelled by lack of awareness more than anything else.

Of course, in India, population puts enormous pressure on forests and wildlife habitats. Added to this is the superstitions and traditional beliefs of the east (not only India but China and elsewhere) that encourages organised poaching. Sariska tiger reserve has lost ALL its tigers suddenly. Maoin reason is the lucrative markets in the far east for tiger parts.

Let us hope greater awareness now and among the next generation gives a decent chance to these animals.

This is a classic, Pandiyan ~~ timely, eloquent, timeless ~~ a disarming encounter with an ancestral being whose solemn eyes plead for compassion on behalf of endangered species, which now include the human race. Your poignant portrait is an emphatic broadside that must be presented again & again as a insistent reminder of the respect we owe to our forebears ~~ and our responsibility to the entire web of life on Earth, including our own.
