Humans, Nature and Human Nature

Humans, Nature and Human Nature by Pandiyan.
Thus does man, in every age, vindicate, consciously or unconsciously, his celestial birthright. Thus does Nature hold on her wondrous, unquestionable course; and all our systems and theories are but so many froth-eddies or sandbanks, which from time to time she casts up, and washes away.
Thomas Carlyle, 1829.

Tsunami came fifteen months ago. So many things happened and the effects are still felt. What I was drawn to was the psychological effect it has on those who live by the sea. New houses built, new colonies formed, new boats made, new technologies brought and new life has begun.

But even the most experienced fisherfolk or rather only the most experienced fisherfolk are the ones who got affected the most. An eighty year old man said in an interview that the mother ocean 'betrayed' him. He thought he knew everything about the ocean and his eighty years of life made meaningless in few hours of her action. His status, position, self-confidence and his purpose in life smashed in one swift stroke.

Even today some sensational newspaper talks vaguely of some crank predicting a tsunami, the crowd becomes half or less in the beach near our house. Alcoholism and addiction with a sense of fatalism is rampant. They all have a major 'reason' that no one knows what will happen tomorrow. So there is fear, hopelessness, inadequacy.

What does it all mean? Human frailty or truly enigmatic nature. Do we feel more despondent and more helpless because we feel all powerful and suddenly realise it is not so? Is it because we are not very realistic in our views about nature and us? Is it because we seek to conquer more than try to understand?

For those interested, here is the full essay of Carlyle, Signs of Times.

Pandiyan, what a celestially beautiful scene you show - and the facts you tell seem much more complex and difficult to accept. Perhaps we humans mostly live our lives denying our mortality and vulnerability because that allows us to concentrate on all the small details of getting through our days. Not many can balance the contradictions, value the little things while admitting how tiny they are in the universe.
Thank you for image and thought.

What a perfect shot Pandiyan, it had to be in B/W to convey the true meaning of what you say. Your words are a poignant reminder of what to many in the world was a '10 day wonder'(in news terms) but now share with us details of the personal impact of the catastrophe. The other day I was talking to a charity worker who is being seconded by a major UK charity to go to Sri Lanka for a year to help sort out the emotional problems of aid workers and counsellors who live there and lost their families in the disaster.Counsel for the counsellors.

Perfect, beautiful picture to illustrate what we in the West have already put to one side to forget. Fishermen are the bravest people, risking their lives to eat.

Brilliant, Pandiyan: the entire composition! Again, you give us much food for thought. Those who live their lives on the sea understand its personality, its whims, and the dangers. They sense the rhythm of the water's hearbeat.

But can one completely understand nature, of any kind? An extraordinary and completely "out of place" event like a tsunami shatters the illusion of totality.

I do not believe that the fishermen were complacent in any way --they cannot be to survive; reason and experience take us far, but the Grand Puzzle is never complete; there are always some missing pieces....

Just my few cents.

And the photograph itself is superb!

Nature and Human Nature....Forever unpredictable.
Your thoughts on Survivors of Tsunami and the Q you raised are thought provoking.
Human eye (flickr) sees tranquility, may be some storm clouds, poetic glimpse of sunrays...ETC
and your Photo,WONDEFULLY SHOWING ALL OF THE ABOVE!!
Wonder how it is perceived Through the eyes of surviving fisher folks of Tsunami?
fear? / acceptance! of Nature's Nature?

Lovely capture. It is true, we are made a glass, we think so indestructable, but can break within seconds - with the right force.

I do wish that those people do see that their journey is not over, and that they should have hope. Hope is a beautiful guide in this life, it is the water that quenches our thirst when the sun has made the path too dry.

A peaceful photo.

It is interesting that many humans have the illusion of power relative to nature-- called optimism-- and understandable that they are so demoralized after experiencing the terrifying unpredicatability of nature. They have lost the sense of the continuity of life as they knew it.

wonderful image . . . very evocative.
touching narrative.
in January 2003 our home burned to the ground . . . we lost three cats and a home full of the gathered possessions of several combined lives . . . . it only takes a moment . . . . life is tenuous and fragile, and we meander along as they we own life and nature itself when it is completely the other way around.

humans tend toward arrogance, foolishly, and dwell on the physical rather than the spiritual.

but, i know a little bit of how he feels . . . . losing it all is very disorienting

can't help but think of the wild life scantuary in SirLanka that was hit by the tsunami and how not one single animal was even hurt by it. Confirmed my belief that we have moved way to far from nature for our own good...

your photo carries such poignancy in the backdrop of events that have worked to shape its moment. Remarkably though this fisherman will find some small residue of strength inside with which to continue, as so many of his ancesters have done. I'd have to say that the amazing thing is that we manage to carry on, after such an experience, such a thudding shaking of pent up forces. As always Pandiyan you make us reflect, help us grow.

I am quite heartened by this response my dear friends,

Kathy - Wonderful to listen to your words. Coming from personal experience. Though I am not a religious person, I too believe in humility. More we understand the limits, greater our appreciation of what we have and richer our lives become.

Aarthy - I definitely don't think you are kid at all! Or perhaps you are wise beyond your years :)

Aarathi - Interesting you mention that. I am told by some research staff stationed in Andamans that many indigenous tribesman totally escaped the fury while the 'civilised' parts were totally devastated. Of course, they don't know how.

elledino - One reason I appreciate people such as Socrates, Einstein or Russell is that despite being very wise they still looked at the world with wonder and knew their wisdom was not much.

Idol - I intentionally positioned the boat and the sunrays offcentre. That looked more pleasing to my eyes.

Supriya - I rarely do B&W; it is more difficult to do it well. I wanted a touch of dark moods, reflection and nostalgia in this one. B&W is a hit or miss affair for me.

Jinx - Thanks a lot for your concern. Countries like India are gearing up to face the ocean's fury such as this. People are better prepared and are a lot more respectful of nature now.

Rongzoni - Yes, humankind does have a lot of resilience and builds up courage and fortitude after most disasters. It is just that as individuals some of us find that difficult. While the pendulam swings between the two extremes of supreme confidence and woeful hopelessness, we would wish a more balanced approach.

Thanks Gauri and Gale.

What I found most amazing about the whole tsunami ordeal was the grit of our people to just get on with life after that...
Yes, we all weeped when it happened..
but...
No matter how much we are pulled down, no matter how much we are devastated, no matter how much nature unleashes her fury on us, the people of india have a rare ability to just put things behind them and move on...
Maybe it has something to do with everyday life in india being nothing less of a struggle...
Maybe God gives the power of resilience beforehand to people he is going to test..
I am not sure what it is...But it makes me proud, time and again, to be Indian!

Thanks for sharing this wonderful photo!

Thanks Divya Divya for sharing your thoughts. I too believe that humans have remarkable resilience though at times they have their moments of frustration and desperations.

Why Indians, all humans and indeed why humans, all organisms have this resilience. Helps them survive. The way nature operates.

yes, Pandiyan, I suppose you're right...it IS the way nature operates...but I still believe that some organisms/humans have the power of resilience in higher degrees than others!
