Double

Double by Palmero.
Lisa, one of my gymnasts, doing her double, Peter standing by ready to catch her if something goes wrong.

CUT AWAY, in order not to "steal" first thoughts from you guys :)

The purpose of those shots was to study the technical details of the jumps. Putting the exposures all into the same frame was an idea I got after shooting.

Here's another result from a similar experiment: www.flickr.com/photos/palmero/132870776/

The background is a bit washed out but that isnt necessarily a bad thing with this photo. It puts the focus on what you want and that is the jump.

Damn! My first thoughts were all covered by your description notes. Next time, don't preempt what others might think about your photo; let others have a chance to experience your photo themselves!! :) But seriously, I really like this photo alot. It should make it to the Explore Pages (if not already!)

FT: great effect!

I didn't even look at the background, until I had read your comment. I agree that the lighting probably could have been better, but it's still a very nice picture!

Hehehe ... Well I thought I might ruin your chances by blurting out pretty much all my own thoughts ;) I'll edit the description right now! I actually like it more every time I look at it so I concider myself excused for doing the description-editing :)

cool composition. how did you acheive this? i mean what exactly did you do to combine the shots?
Posted 45 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

Palmero says:

turbohamster: I combined all the exposures in PS (one layer for each frame). Added layer masks to the frames and made them transparent (by brushing them with black) at the gymnasts positions in the underlying frames. The background is the last of the frames. In addition, I had to do some cloning on the trampoline since I didn't use a tripod and the trampoline in the last frame wasn't in exactly the same spot as in the first frame. That a clear enaugh description (I'd be happy to send you a better descr. if needed)? :)

I like this use of HDR a lot! I would work to try to have something in the background that is not a light source. Understandably, they might not be happy to move the gym around just so you can have a great shot. Perhaps try from a different angle?

The brightness brings the score down. Are there any blinds available?

hotdogg3uk: I know, the backlight is a drawback, and in the heat of the moment I honestly didn't think about it that much. I'm not even sure there are blinds there, we don't train there that often. On the other hand, I find that it helps accentuate the gymnasts positions (which are the really interesting elements of this photo from a gymnastics-technical point-of-view).

Perfection is a fault [deleted] says:

It is certainly an interestimg image. Maybe a faster shutter speed and tripod use would improve it. Must be good for training purposes. I can look at this over and over again. 8/10

Palmero--you mentioned a problem with the lighting. The glare can be corrected using Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop or a similar program.

The action / disection of the jump is very very cool.
Its composition as a picture is undone by the business of the background and the slight over-exposure of the left side. A good image, but more of an exposition of the sport than an art image.
