After a dull afternoon the sun burst through and flooded the prairie with golden light. I was in position on a hilltop overlooking the Frenchman River Valley and 70 Mile Butte in Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan. I was pleased to see the sky open up a little above the horizon line, as the pale blues complement the yellow-ochre hues of this winter prairie. In deciding how to compose - not quite a snap decision, as I had been watching the sunlight sweep across the foreground and climb those hills - keeping the brightly lit area minimal in the frame felt right. I tried variations, but this was my first shot.
