A very evocative photo of a fantastic location that I would love to visit one day.
Apparently in the Middle Ages, there were over seventy of these towers, built as a demonstration of power and one-upmanship by the rich patrician families of the town. Sort of , "Ha ha, my tower's bigger than yours!"

You are right. In the Middle Ages there were 72 of these towers. Today only 13 are left. The biggest of them has 54 metres.

And the fascinating thing about San Gimignano is that it is situated high up on a hill, and when you approach it from a distance it appears as if it has a "Manhattan skyline"!
Beautiful town (too many tourists especially in the summer) but well worth a visit!
Nice photo, Paco!

One can only imagine what the town of Bologna looked like in medieval times - it had a similar tower building fetish: it had over 200 of them, of which only two major ones remain, the Torri Pendenti (leaning towers).

this brings back memories of travelling there when I was 13. Thank you for posting this! I can't remember exactly which tower we climbed but I remember the town vividly!
