Australian Spider plus Lunch

Australian Spider plus Lunch

As before with terrestrial invertebrates, I'd be grateful for a precise ID. A book about Aussie spiders is high on my list of things to order.

Redback Spider

Redback Spider

Latrodectus hasselti.

This is a pretty dangerous animal. A bite can kill a child or a person with compromised health, and cause agonizing pain in healthy adults. If agonizing pain is the better outcome of an encounter with an animal, it's serious.

Thanks to my friend and new co-worker James for the spot!

A few of these live right outside my new office in Western Sydney. Don't let anyone tell you that being a theoretical biologist isn't dangerous.
