Did you go inside? My boyfriend has been, and he must take me sometime too! I was checking out a Flickr photoset a while back of the museum and in with the images of mummies was the director Tim Burton striking some funny poses, the photographer was obviously friends with him, was an interesting set.

Hi there,
Yes, I was in Guanajuato for three weeks. I went to the mummy museum on my first day and later, when a friend came to join me, I went again. It was one of the weirdest museums - in fact THE weirdedst museum - I have been to in my life!

I bet it was, when you went were the mummies in the glass display cases? In the photos I saw on Flickr they were, but when my boyfriend went years back they were just pretty much laying round on benches and stuff.

Indeed they were in cases. Each mummy had his/her own glass coffin. Many of them still had their clothes on - some the whole otufit, others just their socks and shoes pretty much in perfect order. I'm reasonably ghoulish and would never NOT have gone, but I did have some guilt attached. These people were only ever dug up because their relatives didn't pay their grave tax after they were buried. It seems kind of unfair that in death not only do you suffer the indignity of being dug up because of a money matter but you then get put on display (when you are most definitely having a bad hair day) for tourists to come and point and go 'ooooh, look I can see his pubic hair!' Seems like a big price to incur for not paying your bills!!!
I bought an old (1970s I think) second hand booklet from Amazon on the mummies of Guanajuato a few months back that also has photographs of them pre-glass cases. They are all arranged standing up, learning against the walls. Really creepy.

Oh I can imagine I would feel a bit guilty too, it is unfair that that is why they are displayed, and its worse when tourists are disrespectful! Funny some living people would do anything for the sake of fame, and these poor people have no choice in the matter. That said I am sure it is fascinating to see though!

Well said! And yes, it is a fascinating place. Hope you get there one day. Love your artwork, by the way. I will drop by from time to time to check out what you've been up to! Cheers, Megan :)

Oh I will eventually!

Thanks Megan, if only I had more time to devote to it, been so busy working lately, it's not fair! Anyway you have some lovely photos yourself. ^_^
