JR Outsiders patch pano

hi p0ps!
JR Outsiders patch pano by p0ps Harlow.
I consider this a failure of technique. Because it doesn't communicate the subject, which is a figurative mural on the side of a building. What we see here is too much about the 142 photos I took at close range (about 3 meters), it doesn't get across the reason I took them.

I'm posting it because it's such a high profile art piece and I wrote about working on it. It demonstrates a weakness of the method, therefore helpful to those few others who have been practicing similar patch pano techniques.

Here are better depictions of the JR mural:

JR's site has many photos of his spectacular artwork, I particularly like his work in a fevela above Rio de Janeiro

The mural is part of “The Outsiders” which opens on the 26th September and run through till 12th October. The show will feature works from Faile, Paul Insect, JR, Antony Micallef, Jonathan Yeo, Miranda Donovan, Invader, David Choe, Mark Jenkins, Todd James, Vhils, Polly Morgan, Mode 2, BAST, Conor Harrington and Zevs.

Well done Steve!
It takes guts to try something that massive. I've tried but cant keep it together or maintain the concentration well enough (and have technical limitations too!)
I love the shadow with the joseph beuys/magritte hat, and the constantly contrasting grids and meshes-metal doors, windows, fire escapes, pavement grilles, window openings etc etc. Overall it has a sombre subdues sort of light. The way the form of the figure is suggested reminds me of Braque's cubist paintings, with the shaded planes etc that fuse when you squint. I'm guessing you stood in very many spots in front of the huge picture and took shots at many angles (not just from one standpoint)?
Nice, tasteful and inspiring work....

yes, Jonathan, I shot as I moved along the sidewalk thru the middle 80% of the mural. if the pano was only about the building or if the mural was more colorful or higher contrast, I'd like it better.

I see what you mean, but the mural is hard to photograph even if you are just trying to document it in one shot. The contrast and tonal levels makes seeing it hard especially in reduced size. The scale is huge but the detail is hard to make out save in one or two sections. So I think you did what you could with it. That is how I see it.

I didnt see your comment to begin with Steve, and thanks for being honest about what you saw as failure, but maybe your being too hard on yourself? Personally I like your pano as it stands, but then theres more than one way to skin a cat....!
The painting (I take it its painted?) seems to be a predominantly silvery grey color, and light seems to reflect off of it; the other photos you posted of it were taken at night, was it designed to be viewed best at night with flash gun light? Its not my place to advise, and I'm not being nosy or anything, but maybe you could do a new version at night, or do maybe a smaller number of daytime shots, each with a wider area containing more information, but more abrupt joins? Or do the mural with one exposure or conrtast and the surrounding urbanscape a different way?
cheers Jonathan
PS Did you try calicoing this set of shots?

Jonathan, thnx for the discussion and those are good suggestions, but, I think I've spent enough time on it, probably won't try re-shooting it. If I used a real camera, I might have. But, it's just not a project that lends itself well to my iPhone method, so I'll let it go at that.

I will try shooting at the gallery opening... if there is one - unclear on that so far. Openings and installations fit my method and interest more as far as shoot Art goes.

I did try Calico on this set of photos, but it just threw up it's hands and ran away! Too many shots of fairly plain silver paint, it couldn't make heads or tails out of them (pun recognized) .

Oh, the mural is a paste-up with white and silver spray paint added.

This isn't about the photo (although an interesting failed experiment) but a thank you on the heads up on the show. I find it harder and harder to stay on top of everything lately. Not sure I'll make it, but I'll try... But I'll TRY about anything.

too much "attempt", "experiment" talk. this is great looking. it's nice to see a stitch made of so many parts that hints more at the form over the details. it begins to take on dimension within the overlaps.
like a freshly masonited bowl.
and lastly, sorry i missed the meeting.

its like a chinese hand scroll, and one can read it like a movie scrolling the streets?

i feel that the strong juxta-imposed edges competes with central subject matter?

but lovely details ..

I agree with you, Jerry - on the edges interfering with the subject. The mural can't be read here, and that should be the subject., but, hey, win some, lose some. It was all fun.
