Presumably the colour is pretty accurate? The yellow eyes stand out so much from the muted tones of the feathers.

Hope all the excited Canberra twitchers haven't scared it away and have to wait another 15 years ;-)

Thanks for the kind comments but let me point out what might not have been obvious - that this is a crop of part of the earlier photo, so I wasn't actually getting any closer. And also without false modesty, please note that photographing a stationary owl would have to be the easiest possible bird photography possible, assuming you have a lens that gets close enough. The rest is holding the camera still enough and knowing how to use photoshop!

Peter - the colours are as accurate as I can make them. No saturation boost if that is what you mean, but then playing with contrast/curves changes the saturation anyway so that doesn't help a lot. The photo looks like what I reckon this owl would look if it was standing a metre in front of you in good light. The eyes are variably bright yellow depending on the lighting, but always impressive.

David - good to meet you too (as well as everyone else from SE NSW/ACT who has ever said "I like birds"! - the number of people filing through the gardens was literally incredible, mind-boggling...)
