Let's get out of here!

Let's get out of here! by aaardvaark.
Two Brown Quail expedite their withdrawal from the would-be photographer's precinct. Found at the Fyshwick Sewerage Ponds around sunset on Monday. The small story ... I was walking with an experienced bird person who had just introduced me to some interesting ducks that inhabit the ponds. I was thinking ducks and waterbirds as we walked back to the car, but in a flash of random prescience asked Experienced Birder if he had ever managed to see a quail hiding on the ground before it flushed (and scattered into the distance). At the exact moment the question was finished, two quail flushed at our feet and disappeared into the sun. We then found four more that refused to fly and tried to get some photos as they ducked for cover.

I read a book recently which I think you might enjoy - The Big Twitch by Sean Dooley. And this is a fabulous shot of the quail, considering the difficulty level of these birds.

Thanks for the comments; I do really like the earnest looks on their faces as they skedaddled!

Brett - thanks for the book suggestion, it sounds interesting as the review says for its insights as to what is "normal". With birds as well, should be a good read and I'll try the library for it. As for difficulty in photographing quail - two people have since told me tales of quail practically walking over the toes of their shoes, so I think it's a matter of luck as always. I've certainly never seen more than the rump of one disappearing at high speed before. One person told an interesting story about how quail are apparently disoriented and disturbed by thunder or explosions, and wander around in a distracted sort of way. Might be worth trying a quail-haunt when the next thunderstorm arrives.

Amazing photo! It makes me feel slightly dizzy looking at it! If Brown Quail are anything like the Quail we get here in the UK then getting any photo of them, let alone a photo like this, is a remarkable achievement. Even if they're not like ours, this photo is still a remarkable achievement.

Thanks Stu! As I say often, my 'technique' relies on vast quantity, and photoshop to the rescue in many cases. One in 30 of my panning shots work as I would like them to. Which is an advance on 1 in 100 of the old days.

Phantastic Capture! I doubt this shot would have been possible with my amature equipment (Eos 350d + 70-300 IS USM). May I ask what you used (particularly which lens)?
..Oh, I shold have read ..Canon 400mm 5.6 it is!

Tomba - your lens is a good lens for birding except that the focus is slow. It's very sharp, I love it. This was taken with a 300D or 20D

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Phasianidae: Grouse, pheasants and partridges, and we'd love to have your photo added to the group.

This is a great shot, and if you haven't already, that book is good reading. Love the panning technique - cheeky quails!
