Owlet-nightjar at home 3

Owlet-nightjar at home 3 by aaardvaark.
Not an owl (or a nightjar) but they look like miniature owls. They are nocturnal and eat larger insects. On cold winter mornings they can be found sunning themselves at the entrance to their roosting hollow. Almost impossible to see unless you are looking for them.

I've never seen one of these - you have a great eye to find these animals.

Lookfar - I wish I could smile and modestly agree with you, but I am not good at finding such animals at all. This one I was shown the location by a more observant person - twice - (but no bird). Eventually I went back alone and got lost, finally stumbling on cute bird by accident. I joined Canberra Ornithological Group to help improve my bird knowledge and get some pointers.

A bit more nicely rustic than the one I saw - which roosted in a scaffolding pipe supporting a water-tank in someone's garden. They remind me of cats.

But presumably yours was less shy and more accessible? That would make up for lack of rusticity since I've yet to see one of these apart from the face, and then only from a considerable distance..

Distance? This one looks very close indeed to me! Mine was certainly good and wary, tho I did see the whole animal in the end (I'll get those and a few thousand other photos sorted out one day...)

Cool shot! The owl seems to be very much at home there.
