Oxfam America's Walk for Climate Justice - Earth Day 2008 |
Climate change is a global issue: we are
all affected. But poor people are hit
first and worst.
As a show of solidarity, Oxfam America
organized the Walk for Climate Justice.
It is our visual representation of the
current and future hardships caused by
the impacts of climate change around the
world. This event occurred in more than
10 US cities, including Chicago, Denver,
Los Angeles, Miami, and San Francisco.
Participants in the walk dressed in
matching white shirts to show that
climate change does not discriminate
based on race, religion, or economic
status: it affects us all. Carrying
water buckets brought from home, the
participants walked for approximately 10
minutes. Although the actual distance
traveled today was small, it represented
the increasingly longer distances that
women, men, and children living in
developing
countries travel each day for water.
