Adjitti Mahamat waters lettuce as part of a market gardening project. It was set up by villagers with the help of Oxfam to provide income and food security for the community in Kassira, Guera province, Chad.
"I am proud when my children are well fed and they fall asleep. If I prepare a broth, they will eat it, otherwise they might go to bed without eating."
People across the Sahel region are once again facing a serious food crisis in 2012.
This ecologically fragile region is becoming increasingly vulnerable to insufficient rainfall, and fluctuating animal and food prices that are affecting millions of pastoralists and agro-pastoralists across this region of Africa. Grazing areas for their livestock are also fast disappearing, and as a result their livelihoods are threatened.
