Milky Eye

Milky Eye by jcoterhals.
You know the drops-that-hit-water photos? They get their charm from color, texture and angle of view (i.e. you always see the water sculpture from the side).

But today I started thinking how these photos would look if you shot them directly from above. I gathered that they'd look very different, but would they still look good? Well, I really shouldn't think about these things because before I knew it, there I was: crouched over a plate of milk, like a kitten, trying to set up my camera equipment.

Anyway: This photo shows a drop of raspberry juice that hits a blue ceramic plate covered with a thin layer of milk. To my astonishment lot of the pictures looked like this: Like an alien eye looking at me.

So I don't think the straight-above-approach to droplet photography will catch on, but it certainly created a different looking photo.

Technical data:

Manual exposure 1/200 and f/45 for depth of field -- what you see here is about 1 cm across and it's so close focused that i needed the depth of field.

A flash from left, another from right, in an attempt to minimize shadows.

mccun934: Your words pretty much summarizes what I thought myself :-)

Valerie Peters: Thanks.

<magic_mom> Yes, it's creepy. The drop of juice adds a little "bloddyness" to the photo, and that's creepy in itself. But I actually think milk up close and personal like this is more creepy than one thinks when just drinking it :-)

anii579: Thank you. Yes, I think it's a little creative myself too, but it's really just a happy accident that it became an eye (but now I know how to make it should I want to in the future...)

An Old Barbie Doll: You really have your way with words :-) Yuk and brilliant -- I like that phrase :-)
