King Snake

King Snake

This is one of these days where I can't look at my in ear head phones and not think they look like a snake.

I found this old photo by chance today. I had forgotten how much I liked it back then.

Canon G1X - RAW Abuse

Canon G1X - RAW Abuse

As I've mentioned a couple of times in my photostream already, I was lucky enough to borrow a pre-release version of the upcoming Canon Powershot G1X camera for a few hours last week. I've posted a portrait and an outdoor photo earlier. (Visit my blog for a writeup about my initial impressions of it.)

This time I post a composite of a SOOC JPEG file (lower right half) compared to a *very* over processed RAW file (upper left half). It's not meant to tell you neither how good or bad SOOC JPEGs are, nor how good or bad my RAW processing skills are *).

What I want to show by posting it is that the RAW files have plenty of latitude during processing, without becoming plagued by strange noise and artefacts (unlike my Olympus E-PM1 for instance).

I think people who love to fiddle with knobs and levers in Lightroom and similar software will enjoy the RAW files from this camera.

*) I have to admit the SOOC JPEG is closest to reality here, but still I think introducing healthy doses of saturation, contrast and clarity makes the ice more pleasing to look at.

An elegy for Kodak (and film in general)

An elegy for Kodak (and film in general)

Two strange things happened simultaneously today:

1) I read that Kodak had filed for chapter 11, and
2) my oldest son asked what this roll of film was.

When trying to explain to him how the film was used, and how the cameras worked, the film was processed etc., I realised he didn't have the vocabulary to understand what I was saying.

So it dawned on me that the day Kodak died, was the day I realised my sons would probably never understand what this is and most likely never ever find this a relevant technology to use for anything.

Canon G1X - f/8 at ISO 800

Canon G1X - f/8 at ISO 800

Another Canon Powershot G1X photo. Visit my blog for a writeup about my initial impressions of it.

This time a portrait taken in window light. Daylight in january here where I live isn't particularly strong, so I bumped ISO to 800 to achieve 1/30 at f/8. This was taken at full zoom, i.e. 65mm (35mm equivalent: 112mm). In my opinion this shows two things: At ISO 800 the camera is virtually noise free, and also that the image stabilizer works well.

Shot in RAW, and processed without any adjustments trough the DPP software that came with the camera. Further adjustments, such as a slight crop, contrast, some sharpness, etc., in Lightroom 4 beta. (I guess using a pre-release camera and pre-release software is kind of a nerd variant of living on the bleeding edge...)

My blog.
