Make a homopolar electric motor. Step 6 (optional): Stripes on the magnet, added with a Sharpie, to allow a tachometer to read the rotational speed of the motor.

We have boxes and boxes of these; we use them for shopping lists and everything else. They are a very convenient size for all sorts of things.
