Ash Cloud - Eyjafjallajokull Eruption
Eyjafjallajokull, Iceland
This shot is from last Saturday. The eruption has changed from being
an explosion ash spewing one, to being lava flow type of eruption. The
eruption and lava are in limited contact with water and ice now so it
has become less explosive.
I went to the scene of the eruption again yesterday. The ash cloud has gone mostly and risk of flooding is minimal so the authorities have opened full access to the area. But now the area is open, the clouds had closed in. It looked like the mountain was playing a joke because it was the only cloud in the area and it just hovered around the mountain all night. It even snowed for a while, just as Iceland today celebrates the arrival of summer.
But one could clearly feel the presence of the volcano. Very load roars echoed through thick clouds and into the valley north of the volcano. Standing 10km away we could sometimes feel pressure waves from explosions hit us. It was an eerie feeling to hear and feel this power and it sent shivers down my spine.
NOTE: For travelers going to Iceland. The volcano is only affecting small part in south Iceland. Rest of the country is perfectly safe. Here in Reykjavík we wouldn´t even know that there is an eruption if it wasn´t for the news.
