Electrified Ash - Eyjafjallajökull - Iceland

    Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland
Finally it cleared up in Iceland and the latest eruption in Eyjafjallajökull was clearly viewable from the ground. Went there with my wife, Skarpi and Gunnar Gestur.

We got pretty close to the eruption about 10km away from crater. Seeing these huge columns blast kilometers into the air was just unbelievable. The size of this thing can not be portrait by a image. You have to see it by your self. One feels where little in comparison with forces of this size.

Every night before dark (around 10pm now) the area is evacuated because of flood risk. At night one can not see if there is a flood coming your way. We however got a special permission to stay inside the safety zone. This is the time when the forces of the eruption really become evident. We saw lava fountains probably 500-700m high through the ash cloud. This lava fountain and ash cloud was followed by severe lightning activity.

The brightness seen in the volcano is not erupting lava but extremely powerfull lightning strike that was created by the ash cloud.

I see something like "lightening" within the ash cloud... Was that caused by the volcano ash and the cloud?

Beautiful, Örvar Atli. To say the least! I flew over there yesterday and managed to catch some closeups. The powers at play there are nothings short of scary.

We saw a lot of lighning even in the bright daylight but from the plane it was impossible to photograph them of course except had we gotten very (very) lucky.

In case you'd like to take a closer look you'll find these shots at

I have prepared a trip to Iceland in July with a group of Spanish photographers, one night we slept near the volcano, I hope there are no problems and we can make the trip.
      Congratulations for your photos
