As most of you know allready the small eruption at Fimmvörðuháls has changed to a huge eruption at the nearby Eyjafjallajökull.
Unlike the first eruption the area around the glacier has been heavily affected by the new eruption which under the glacier where it is thickest. Flood waves of melted water and Ice crash down the mountain side regularly spreading over the lowland below washing away road and destroying farmland.
To the east of the eruption has heavy ashfall as we speak as the wind blows from the west. Reykjavík lies to the west of the eruption so we are unaffected yet.
The effects are not only local in south Iceland. I heard news of heavy cancellations of safaris in Kenya, their customers from northern Europe are grounded by the far reaching ash.
Update: This is a image of the old eruption. I will not dare getting this
close to the new one as it is much more explosive and unpredictable.
