retarded citizens thrift store

retarded citizens thrift store by Orrin.
The sign in its entirety:

Thanks to emdot for making a special and circuitous side-trip into Oxnard so I could take this photo.

Hey! We passed by this place 2 weeks ago as a side-trip from Santa Barbara but had not done our research like you had. How did you know about this place? I laughed and read the name out loud to Scott as he negotiated traffic because it was completely old skool and now politically incorrect, as you noted in your tag.

@Echo_29- I noticed it from the train as we were pulling out of Oxnard Station. I made a mental note to return because I also liked the signs for A-Burger and Radio Lazer.

@em- Once you go wide, you never go ...back.

The ARC of VC (Associated Retarded Citizens of Ventura County), definitely has the unfortunate, well, fortune of having what is now considered to be a politically incorrect name. We (at Special Olympics) have even changed our terminology from "Mental Retardation" to "Intellectual Disabilities" to describe our athletes.

I think what it comes down to, is that "retarded" only has negative connotations because people (on the whole) use it as a negative term. But truly, the word "retarded" is not negative at all.

I like the wide angle too.

We have one in Ventura too. Who in the Ventura County didn't hit up the Retarded Citizens Thrift Store in our high school days? It was one of the better stores in the row.

Of the coat? It's far too incredible to actually get out of the wardrobe.

It's just heavy. I'm just lazy. My wardrobe has really stupid doors. I try not to get things out too often.

If I lived in the area, I would have a hard time resisting the urge to post signs for the THRIFT STORE TO BENEFIT HANGNAIL SUFFERERS.

Ah yeah, Em's got it. That's much more what I was going for. The only problem is that when I shop at thrift stores, I often become vaguely dissatisfied.

I can never really "belong" in my neighbourhood because I have very little patience for thrift-store shopping.
