Bass Rock (LE vs IA) aka Long Exposures with no Filters

Bass Rock (LE vs IA) aka Long Exposures with no Filters

I wrote a tutorial on Image Averaging and part of it was to do a comparison of a traditional Long Exposure versus an Image Average shot. This was one of the 2 results. The other can be seen here.
The tutorial takes you through what you have to do in the field as well as back at base. There is also a Photoshop script that does the image averaging calculation, sets the appropriate opacity and then merges the layers for you.
In the tradition LE shot I used a B+W 110 ND on it's own and did 2 exposures. A 4m exposure of the sky and a second 12m for the foreground.
For the IA shot I stacked my LEE's - 0.9, 0.6 covering the whole frame with the 0.3 on the sky. I then shot 16 frames, each at 12s with an additional 3s gap between exposures giving a total of around 4m.

St Monans #5

St Monans #5

Merry Christmas Everybody.
Shot a month ago. This was the compo I had in mind before I visited - Deliberate square crop.

November 2011, St Monans, Fife
One of my Flickr contacts posted a shot from here and I chimped! :) I thought the wall was a really interesting shape, so I added this place to the "must visits".
I was going to go a few weeks ago but a sudden attack of lazyitis had me bedridden. This weekend I decided that I was going. The tide would be in, the weather man made a prediction which, as it turned out was wrong but at least it sounded about perfect. So I set my alarm for 5am and headed out at about 5:30am.
I arrived nice an early and was able to start shooting before the big yella fella even hit the horizon.
I also bumped into a couple of Flickerites who had the same idea so that gave us all a chance to chat while shooting which was nice.
Anyhoo, below you'll see the shots in the order they where taken.

St Monans #3

Description:
A few weeks ago I saw this cracker from Zedboss and immediately put a pin on the map as a place to go. The sea wall looked really interesting so I fired up to St. Monans this morning for sunrise as the tide was in and the weather forecast looked OK.

I bumped into Alan (Vivid Image) and Shahbaz (ajnabeee) while there so the three of us probably spent more time chatting than shooting :)

Thanks again Shahbaz for the go on the Lee Big Stopper. Educational! :)

This shot is an image average of 19 frames. My favourite I think. Probably not the strongest compositionally but I really like the colours, especially the water.

You can see the rest here.

The Bass Rock in Blackcurrant Sorbet

The Bass Rock in Blackcurrant Sorbet

Last one from last weekend - I have more but you're probably as sick of them as me.
This is without question my fave of the set and was the shot I went out to shoot! Nice when you see it before you shoot it.

Moonlight Bass Rock

Moonlight Bass Rock

Not really.

Liked the wee fella at the bottom left and it kinda looks a wee bit like moonlight on the water
